The Biel Chess Festival takes place 17th-30th July 2010. The main Grandmaster tournament saw a three way tie between Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Fabiano Caruana and they will play off starting at 10am on Thursday morning.

It is a ten player round-robin, in which each player has to play one game against each other. The winner of this tournament will be determined after nine rounds. Games start at 14:00h = 2 p.m. local time (CEST, = 16:00 Moscow, 13:00 p.m. London, 8:00 a.m. New York). All games will be broadcast by the official web site's "Live Games" page and on the Playchess.com server.

Grandmaster Wesley So, the country's youngest chess GM, stamped his class over the local competition by winning the 2010 Phoenix Petroleum Battle of Grandmasters held at the Character Hotel in Tagaytay City from May 25 to June 2. So piled up 8.5 points (seven wins, three draws) to capture his third BoGMs title in as many stagings of the annual event since its inception two years ago.

Nineteen year old GM Ian Nepomniachtchi of Russia is the top ELO points gainer with a +39.3 ELO from his combined exploits in topping the 11th European Individual Championship alone on March 6th to 18th 2010 in Rijeka, Croatia with a 2868 performance and a +27.7 ELO and secondly also scoring a +11.6 ELO at The Russian Team Chess Championships that took place in Dagomys 1st-10th April 2010. GM Nepomniachtchi needing only +4.7 ELO dislodged the former leader GM Le, Quang Liem of Vietnam in their race towards Hyper GM Status at 2700 ELO.

FM Armando Acevedo is a former champ of Mexico. One night when GM Nigel Short thought he was playing Bobby on the internet, he asked his opponent when he played Acevedo. The response was immediate.
